Trending Storylines Hone LinkedIn's Relevance

LinkedIn on Wednesday began rolling out Trending Storylines, a feature that offers curated feeds of the most interesting developing stories in a member’s industry. Storylines are personalized for members through a combination of algorithms and the choices of LinkedIn’s editorial team.
The feeds may include perspectives from relevant influencers and news sources, as well as individuals in the member’s LinkedIn network. Each Storyline will have its own hashtag, so other members can join the conversation.

10 times Facebook censored conservatives

Facebook has finished their own internal investigation into censoring conservatives in their trending section, and surprise, they’ve found no evidence of overt bias. Still, in the wake of a very rough week and tough questions from a U.S. senator, Facebook has now agreed to revamp that section in order to prevent any “unintentional bias.” But what about intentional bias?

Facebook Tweaks Trending Topics Out of Abundance of Caution

Facebook this week said it would make several procedural changes to its Trending Topics feature to quell concerns that the results could be steered in a particular political direction, even though it has found no evidence of bias. The company will retrain workers in the Trending Topics department and institute additional oversight and control to make sure trending stories are selected fairly, said Facebook General Counsel Colin Stretch. “Our investigation has revealed no evidence of systematic political bias,” he noted.

Facebook Tampers With Gears of Journalism, Ex-Curators Charge

Facebook hired promising journalists in their 20s and early 30s to work on its secretive trending news project but did not treat them — or journalism — well, according to a recent report. The curators served as training modules for Facebook’s algorithm, they said. They selected trending news, and decided which news sites each chosen topic would link to. With more than 1.5 billion users worldwide, Facebook is a potent force for distributing content, and the question an uneasy media industry increasingly is asking itself is whether this is the new face of journalism.
