3 Ways Your Sales Organization Should Prepare for AI

AI is a trend, and it’s always nice to be trendy, but as great as CPQ is, it’s still only one source of data. Without sufficient data, AI is extremely limited. It’s like allowing your toddler to learn only about colors: The kid might be a whiz with colors, all right, but without context — in other words, more data — that information won’t make any sense. This is the scary, behind-the-curtain aspect of AI: We’re still in a world where the systems depend on us humans to ensure they’re getting the data they need to deliver good results.

MIT researchers create 'Cilllia' — a sensor-filled 3D-printed hair

Thinking small, the Tangible Media Group at MIT’s Media Lab bucked the trend that bigger is better, using their 3D printing skills to produce a micro-pillar hair they call Cilllia. The 50-um hair can detect changes in the environment and even respond to touch.

GameStop Swims Against the Digital Download Tide

GameStop has signaled resistance to the trend of bundling game consoles with digital downloads rather than physical copies of games. The company ships more than half of all PlayStation 4 and Xbox One software. GameStop worked with its partners to sell the physical version of Madden 16 in its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One bundles, Chief Operating Officer Tony Bartel recently told investors. If a game is offered as part of a promotion, GameStop expects to “see more of these physical offers than digital pack-ins.”

Can Jet Elevate the Shopping Club Experience?

Jet launched this week, and it could be part of a growing trend. Many people love the club retail shopping idea of Costco, BJ’s and Sam’s Club. Jet is a new e-commerce player offering a similar shopping experience. Will the online model be successful? The retail shopping club is one of America’s success stories. Customers pay an annual fee to become members. The theory is they can shop and pay less than at traditional retail stores. The model has proved very successful, but it’s not always a smooth ride.

Vendors Jostle to Gain Edge in Growing Federal Cloud Market

A major information technology trend within the U.S. government is the gradual — and apparently inexorable — migration of federal IT resources to cloud platforms. As the potential for federal cloud adoption has grown, vendors have intensified their marketing and improved their offerings to meet the emerging IT requirements of government agencies. In a chicken-egg fashion, it seems that each round of federal cloud acquisition activity has spawned a parallel response from technology vendors.

Will Motorola Mobility be a Home Run for Lenovo?

Lenovo is one computer maker that seems to be bucking the trend. In recent years they’ve continued to grow while others struggle. Smartphone growth suddenly seems to be a point of interest for Lenovo, which recently acquired Motorola Mobility from Google. It’s still too early to pronounce Lenovo a big winner in smartphones from this acquisition, but to date, things are looking good. Lenovo says they expect the smartphone side of their business to account for roughly 30 percent of revenue in the next 12 months.

The Dark Side of BYOD

The BYOD trend offers pluses for both employers and employees, but sometimes there’s a hitch. Under certain circumstances, the owner of a device suddenly might lose all of the data stored on it. Clients of Fiberlink remotely wiped 81,000 mobile devices between January and June. About 30,000 were cleaned of everything — including personal data such as contact lists, and even photos of deceased relatives and pets. The devices “were a mix of BYOD and corporate-issued devices globally,” said Jonathan Dale, director of marketing at Fiberlink.

Sharks Cove in hand
Though it takes Microsoft a while to jump in on an emerging trend, the company does tend to throw its hat into the ring eventually.
