Batterygate Will Kill Samsung's Holiday Shopping Season

When news of Samsung’s Batterygate first surfaced, I think that mine may have been the only voice saying the Samsung brand would suffer significant damage, but the company didn’t realize it yet. It was lonely, but lately others have come to agree. Samsung now is going through one of the most painful times any company ever has endured. Its brand is severely damaged, and to make matters worse, the injury was both self-inflicted and preventable. So what’s the real problem with the Galaxy Note7? Defective batteries caused phones to overheat.

Wild Salesforce Speculation

The blogosphere lit up last week after rumors surfaced that Salesforce was working with unnamed bankers on a possible merger. It seemed Salesforce was in play, and my colleagues and I went into overdrive speculating about who the suitor might be, what the striking price would be, and whether it was a good idea to do the deal. Of course, as a public company, Salesforce in theory could be bought — though there might not be enough shares circulating for anyone to acquire the company, or even a majority interest, outright.

AT&T May Be Suiting Up to Battle Comcast

AT&T has been negotiating to buy DirecTV for close to $50 billion, based on reports that surfaced Monday. The deal, which has not been confirmed by the companies, could close within a few weeks. The current option on the table, according to anonymous sources, would be largely a stock trade but it would include some cash, with AT&T offering in the low- to mid-$90s per share for DirecTV. That would be roughly a 20 percent premium over its current stock price, and it would value the company at close to $48 billion.
