Zuora VP Matt Darrow: The Intelligence of the Subscription Model

“We think of ‘subscription’ broadly,” said Matt Darrow, VP and general manager of product at Zuora. “It’s when companies do business with customers with whom they have a known relationship, and those relationships are sticky. The subscription model is great for engagement because companies know that in order to be successful they need to deliver ongoing services that keep providing value over and over again, because naturally clients can turn off their service and go somewhere else if they’re not getting the outcome that they expect.”

Echo Owners May Get Their Own Kind of Music

Amazon is planning two music subscription services, according to rumors that began circulating last week. One is a $10 a month offering that is similar to Spotify and Apple Music, and the other is a $4-$5 a month cut-rate service available only on Amazon’s Echo device. Amazon reportedly wants to launch both in September, but it has yet to finalize deals with major music labels and publishers, or to settle on pricing for the Echo-only service, which will be ad-free and offer unlimited music on demand.

Apple to Boost App Store Money-Making Opportunities

Apple is planning a major overhaul of its App Store, including the introduction of a new subscription model for developers and the implementation of a paid search ad program, SVP Phil Schiller indicated in interviews ahead of the company’s Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco next week. The move may help to offset flagging iPhone sales. To encourage developers to sell their apps on a subscription basis, Apple plans to change the current 70/30 revenue-sharing structure, potentially increasing the developer’s share.

Fake Loyalty

There’s an interesting connection between customer relationships in subscription businesses and loyalty, according to a recent article by Zuora CEO Tien Tzuo. It had particular resonance for me, since I just wrote a book about customer loyalty myself. My research is full of old-style approaches to customer loyalty that aren’t really about loyalty so much as they are about, shall we say, customer coercion. You can coerce customers into being loyal — what I consider performing loyal behaviors — but they don’t exhibit true loyalty.

WhatsApp Scraps Fee Model

WhatsApp on Monday announced that it would drop the annual subscription fee and allow people to use the service for free. Company founder Jan Koum announced the move at the DLD Conference in Munich. While more than 900 million people worldwide use WhatsApp to stay in touch with family and friends, the $1-a-year subscription fee could be a barrier to further growth, he said. The service was free for the first year, then $1 per year after that. That business model wasn’t working because many WhatsApp users don’t have a debit or credit card.
