Amazon Offers Binge-Friendly Monthly Prime Subscriptions


Amazon on Monday began offering Prime Video as a standalone service with a monthly subscription option. Prime Video previously was offered only as part of a bundle with Amazon Prime, which is available for $99 a year. Amazon also offers a monthly Prime membership plan for $10.99, which includes all the benefits of the yearly Prime plan, including two-day free shipping. Prime Video is available for $8.99 a month, which is $1 below Netflix’s standard plan but $1 more than the basic Netflix offering that does not include high-definition content.

It's Streaming Time for Showtime


CBS-owned pay-TV service Showtime on Monday announced that it will make its standalone streaming service available on Roku players and Roku TV models, as well as via Sony’s PlayStation Vue, for US$10.99 per month. The service will be accessible through those channels in July — coinciding with the season premieres of Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex, which are slated to air on July 12. Cortana Could Edge Out Siri, Google Now


Microsoft later this year will offer its Cortana personal assistant as a standalone app for iOS and Android devices. Microsoft has been working on the engine behind Cortana “for decades, and it’s arguably better than [Siri or Google Now] simply because it’s far more mature and comprehensive,” said tech analyst Rob Enderle. It also ended limits on the number of friends users can communicate with, and announced its purchase of place messaging pioneer TalkTo as it sets itself for growth.
