Florida will now allow delivery robots on sidewalks

If you see a robot delivering a package in flip flops, you know it’s from Florida.Florida is now the fourth state in the U.S. to pass a law which allows unmanned delivery robots on both sidewalks and crosswalks. The law, which goes into effect July 1, 2017, states that authorized operation “of personal delivery devices within a county or municipality [are permissible] under certain circumstances.”

UK Greenlights Amazon's Drone Delivery Tests


Amazon, which has appealed to U.S. regulators for years for permission to test package delivery with aerial drones, last week announced a new partnership with the UK government to launch a pilot program there. A cross-government team, supported by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, has granted Amazon permission to begin testing beyond-line-of-sight operations in suburban and rural communities; performance of sensors designed to make sure drones can identify and avoid obstacles; and the feasibility of allowing a single person to operate multiple highly automated drone vehicles.

AT&T to DirecTV Customers: Let's Stick Together


AT&T on Monday announced its first-ever nationwide package of TV and wireless services. The new bundle, which is being offered for US$200 per month, will be available beginning Aug. 10. It will include HD and DVR service for up to four TV receivers, along with unlimited talk and text for four wireless lines. Subscribers to the plan will get 10 GB of shareable wireless data. AT&T is the only single provider to offer a plan that includes nationwide TV and wireless services via a single bill, the company noted.

Skies May Soon Be Friendlier to Amazon Drones


Amazon on Wednesday appealed to members of Congress to approve use of its fleet of drones for package deliveries. Electrically powered drones could deliver packages to consumer homes and offices faster, more efficiently and with less environmental impact than automobiles, Paul Misener, vice president of global public policy at Amazon, suggested in testimony before the House Oversight Committee. “Key aviation authorities outside the United States are rapidly pursuing regulatory frameworks and operational rules for UAS,” he pointed out.

Cisco, IBM Bet Big on OpenStack


OpenStack, a free and open source cloud controller package that has been struggling to gain acceptance in the enterprise, took a giant stride forward when IBM and Cisco opened up their wallets last week. IBM announced it would buy hosted OpenStack private cloud provider Blue Box Cloud. Cisco announced plans to purchase Piston Cloud Computing, developer of the CloudOS operating system, which rapidly transforms clusters of commodity servers to turn them into a production-ready unified OpenStack environment.
