HPE Floats Machine Learning in the Cloud


Hewlett Packard Enterprise last week announced the public availability of its HPE Haven OnDemand Machine Learning as a Service. The Microsoft Azure cloud-based platform provides more than 60 APIs and services that deliver deep learning analytics on a variety of data, including text, audio, images, social Web and video. Launched in beta in 2014, HPE Haven OnDemand has more than 12,750 registered developers generating millions of API calls per week, the company said. It’s available as a free service for development and testing.

Yahoo Rolls Up Screen


Yahoo has shut down its Yahoo Screen on-demand streaming video hub, according to news reports. The hub’s offerings included a National Football League game played in London, licensed clips of shows such as “Saturday Night Live,” and a number of original series, including “Community.” The company had to write off $42 million in losses stemming from running original series, Yahoo’s third-quarter report states. Video was one of the four areas CEO Marissa Mayer had banked on to turn the company around.

Amazon Flexes Its Muscles in Crowdsourced Delivery Space


Amazon has entered the on-demand delivery space in its hometown of Seattle, where independent workers are delivering orders within two hours or less. Under its new Amazon Flex program, the company pays workers between $18 and $25 per hour to deliver packages to Prime Now customers, said company spokesperson Kelly Cheeseman. The service is available only in Seattle for now, but Amazon plans to expand it to nine additional U.S. Cities: New York, Baltimore, Miami, Dallas, Austin, Chicago, Indianapolis, Atlanta and Portland.
