Netflix Climbs the Growth Wave as Cable TV Slides

Things change quickly. A few short years ago, Netflix was nothing more than a mail order video rental business. Since then, it has been growing rapidly and changing. Believe it or not, Netflix today has more U.S. subscribers than cable TV. That’s an amazing accomplishment — and a major hit to traditional cable television. Netflix and cable TV are two different technologies on opposite sides of the growth wave. Cable TV has grown over several decades, but its growth wave has crested in recent years, and it now is on the decline.

The parent company of British tabloid the Daily Mail apparently has entered what’s shaping up as frenzied round robin bidding war for Yahoo, a firm that long has worn the mantle of a technology relic incapable of exciting interest. The Daily Mail & General Trust on Monday confirmed a report that it has approached private equity companies on a possible joint bid for the firm. The Federal Trade Commission has updated a longstanding rule governing mail- and phone-based retailers to explicitly include e-commerce vendors as well, meaning that online retailers now must abide by a 30-day shipping requirement or refund customers’ payments if they can’t. Since 1975, buyers from mail- and phone-based sellers have been entitled to expect shipment of their orders within any advertised time frame, or 30 days if no specific promise is made, according to the FTC’s “Mail or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule” issued that year.
