Growth for Customer Loyalty Programs Slowing: Census

Membership in loyalty programs grew at 15 percent this year to total 3.8 billion, according to the recently published 2017 Colloquy Loyalty Census Report. The growth rate recorded in the 2015 loyalty census, when membership stood at 3.3 billion, was 26 percent. Growth has slowed because the United States is a maturing market, said Melissa Fruend, author of the report. Mergers and acquisitions in the grocery sector, which saw memberships plummet 24 percent from 188 million to 142 million, were another factor.

Fake Loyalty

There’s an interesting connection between customer relationships in subscription businesses and loyalty, according to a recent article by Zuora CEO Tien Tzuo. It had particular resonance for me, since I just wrote a book about customer loyalty myself. My research is full of old-style approaches to customer loyalty that aren’t really about loyalty so much as they are about, shall we say, customer coercion. You can coerce customers into being loyal — what I consider performing loyal behaviors — but they don’t exhibit true loyalty.

Processing Customer Loyalty

I’ve had to do a lot of thinking about customer loyalty lately, both for my book and more recently for client engagements. What’s interesting is how chaotic this market is and how many people are writing about it with very little data. There isn’t even strong agreement on the similarities and differences between rewards programs and loyalty. Are they the same? How? We’re all familiar with rewards programs such as frequent flier offers. You collect miles for your trips and eventually cash in the miles for free travel and upgrades.
