Google Mulls Ways to Banish Bad Ads

Google reportedly has been working on a plan to install an ad blocker onto its Chrome browser for both desktop and mobile versions. It also has been considering a collaboration with Microsoft, Facebook and other firms to develop a set of standards that would determine which types of advertising to block from websites. That effort presumably would aim at enhancing the consumer experience in a way that would not jeopardize ads from legitimate firms. Internet companies have struggled to find ways to eradicate abusive advertising in recent years.

Smartphone Kill Switch Law Reaches California Governor's Desk

California is poised to enact a consumer-friendly law requiring smartphone manufacturers to install “kill switches” — that is, antitheft technology that would be activated by the carrier when a consumer alerts it that a device has been stolen or lost. The technology not only wipes the device of personal data but also renders it inoperable.
The state legislature passed the bill on Monday and has sent it to Gov. Jerry Brown to sign. If he does, California will be the second state to have such a requirement. Minnesota became the first in May.
