Odinaff Trojan Targets Banks, Financial Firms Worldwide

Symantec on Tuesday reported on a malware campaign that has targeted financial organizations worldwide for the past 10 months. Dubbed “Trojan.Odinaff,” it has infiltrated the banking, securities, trading and payroll sectors, as well as organizations that provide them with support services. Odinaff is used in the first stage of an attack, to get a foothold into a network. It provides a persistent presence, and lets users install additional tools onto the target network, Symantec explained.

Amazon Drops Wells Fargo Student Loan Program Like Hot Potato

Amazon and Wells Fargo Education Financial Services this week suddenly ended a partnership to offer low-cost loans to college students, less than six weeks after announcing the program. Wells Fargo, the largest lender of private student loans among all U.S. commercial banks, had offered a 0.50 percent discount to Amazon Prime Student customers under the partnership. They were eligible for an additional 0.25 percent rate reduction if they enrolled in the bank’s automatic monthly loan repayment plan.

Amazon Sidles Into Student Loans

Amazon has teamed up with Wells Fargo Educational Financial Services to offer Amazon Prime Students a 0.5 percent discount on private student loan interest rates, Wells Fargo announced last week. Wells Fargo is the largest private student lender in the United States among commercial banks. The Amazon discount can be added to the 0.25 percent discount rate Wells Fargo already offers for enrolling in an automatic monthly loan repayment plan, as well as any of the bank’s interest rate discounts tied to a global promotion.

Microsoft Sees Fertile Ground in Cannabis Compliance

Microsoft has entered a partnership with Kind Financial to create an entity that will obtain government contracts to track seed-to-sale compliance in the legalized marijuana business. The new entity, Kind Government Solutions, will provide state, county and local municipalities with tracking information on marijuana sales to keep them in compliance with government regulations, said Kind Financial CEO David Dinenberg. Microsoft selected Kind to be a part of its newly created Microsoft Health and Human Services Pod for Managed Service Providers.

Report Throws the Book at Yahoo

Yahoo is in the midst of a financial freefall, based on a report that claims the company’s deal book shows a muddled and confusing financial picture that has made potential investors nervous about any effort to salvage the business.
