Capitalizing on the Cloud

I’ve been traversing North America keynoting a series of cloud events hosted by Oracle. At every stop of the roadshow my comments regarding the opportunity to transform traditional product businesses into powerful information services via cloud-based alternatives has generated the greatest interest among enterprise decision-makers and software developers alike. This idea is especially compelling in the context of the unprecedented opportunities being created by the rapidly evolving Internet of Things marketplace.

BlackBerry on Wednesday will hold official launch events for its much-anticipated and potentially game-changing Passport smartphone in Toronto, London and Dubai. The Passport’s unique square-shaped form factor is designed with business and professional users in mind. Samsung Unpacked, Galaxy Note 4 invite
One of the biggest events at IFA 2014 in Berlin is Samsung’s Unpacked Episode 2 — and you watch a live video stream of the event right here, embedded below. Samsung will almost certainly unveil the Galaxy Note 4, which the company hopes will put it in good stead against the upcoming large-screen iPhone 6. The Unpacked event will probably be used to talk more about the Gear S smartwatch, and potentially two other new exciting products: The Galaxy Note Edge and the Gear VR.

Microsoft teases Windows 9 with awful logo mockup, confirms it’s ‘coming soon’

Windows 9 wallpaper mockup
In a rather odd turn of events, Microsoft China has posted a Windows 9 teaser on Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter. The teaser, which featured a rather awful fan-made Windows 9 wallpaper, was quickly removed. The post by Microsoft China clearly stated that Windows 9 is ‘coming soon,’ all but confirming that we’ll get our first look at Windows 9 at a special event later this month (probably September 30).

Hackers take down PSN with DDOS, and Sony president’s plane with a bomb threat

American Airlines, PlayStation Network outage
In a rather bizarre twist of events, a group by the name of Lizard Squad has taken hacking to the next level: Not only did the hackers take down the PlayStation Network with a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack, but they also took down Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley’s airplane with a bomb threat.

Dell's Latitude 12 E7240 – in and Beyond the Office

A confluence of recent events has gotten me thinking about laptops. First, IDC and Gartner released PC market surveys that suggest a significant slowing in the declines plaguing PC sales for the past few years. Then last week, due to “stronger than expected demand for business PCs,” Intel said it was raising Q2 and full-year revenue and gross margin expectations. It’s too early to tell if these developments signal longer-term PC sales stability or even an upward trend, but it’s still good news for under-the-gun PC makers.

With a $6 million prize fund, Dota 2 is now one of the world’s biggest sports

Dendi, at The International, with his adoring fans
Valve’s annual Dota 2 tournament — The International — is now one of world’s biggest sporting events. Thanks to the Valve’s most excellent shepherding of both the game and the 5-versus-5 MOBA genre, an ingenious crowdfunding scheme, and the continuing growth of spectator esports, The International now has a total prize fund of over $6 million. The winning team will take home somewhere in the region of $3 million. To put that into perspective, that’s more than all but the top sports professionals take home in a year. How did Dota 2, which only left beta testing last year, become one of the world’s biggest sports in the world?
