Apple’s tough negotiating stance apparently has hobbled its efforts to bring entertainment industry companies on board with its planned streaming TV service. Talks with Disney, 21st Century Fox and CBS reportedly have fallen through. Had the entertainment and cable TV industry given in, Apple’s demands would have turned current practices topsy-turvy. For example, Apple reportedly wanted a multiyear freeze on the monthly per-viewer rate it would pay for Disney Channel licenses, whereas the standard practice is to increase rates annually.

EFF Lambasts ESA for Hindering Video Game Preservation Efforts


The Electronic Frontier Foundation last week called out the Entertainment Software Association for opposing its video game preservation efforts. The EFF and law student Kendra Albert earlier this year petitioned the U.S. Copyright Office for an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s anticircumvention provisions, which would allow individuals and institutions to modify games so they remain playable after servers are shut down by the games’ publishers.

PlayStation Now Subscription Service to Offer Instant Gaming Gratification


Sony Computer Entertainment America on Monday announced that the PlayStation Now subscription service will become available in the U.S. and Canada on Jan. 13 for the PlayStation 4. It will become available for other PlayStation Now-enabled devices at a later date. The service will provide unlimited online access to more than 100 PlayStation 3 games, including major titles from Sony’s first-party SCE Worldwide Studios, as well as third-party game publishers such as Warner Brothers, Bandai, Namco Games America and Sega.
