Consumers Gain More Power to Seek Data Breach Damages

There are no good outcomes of an electronic data system breach. At best, companies dealing with e-commerce technologies face the formidable task and the resulting cost of repairs. In addition having to fix information technology systems, companies suffering breaches may be increasingly vulnerable to legal action taken by customers whose personal data was affected. A federal appeals court decision handed down earlier this month underscores the potential legal leverage available to consumers whose electronic records are hacked.

Why Are Health Records So Valuable to Cybercriminals?

Protecting the data in electronic health records did not start with the advent of HIPAA, as many people think. Protecting health records has been a critical requirement in the healthcare space since the computers became a fixture in hospitals. However, HIPAA added public reports of fines issued for covered entities’ failure to properly protect data contained within EHRs. Many people assume that EHR data has limited value to unauthorized users. Who cares about my blood test results, or that I just visited my dermatologist?

Legere Steps Back After Hurling F-Word at EFF

John Legere, T-Mobile’s loquacious CEO, has apologized to the Electronic Frontier Foundation for what he described as a “color commentary” that drew sharp criticism. “I am a vocal, animated and sometimes foul mouthed CEO,” Legere wrote in a Monday blog post. “I don’t filter myself and you know that no one at T-Mobile filters me either.” While unapologetic for his demeanor, Legere did offer a mea culpa for “offending EFF and its supporters,” noting that EFF is an organization that fights for consumers.

EFF Launches Write-to-Congress Tool

Email has made communicating with elected officials easy, but a new tool from the Electronic Frontier Foundation is going to make it easier yet. Democracy.io allows you to send an electronic missive to your U.S. representative and senators with a minimum of clicks. Typically, you’d have to go to your legislators’ websites separately to make your views known. When you land at Democracy.io, a form appears for you to enter your home address. The EFF’s tool will use that information to look up the names of your three congresspersons.
