Taking the News Out of Facebook's News Feed Could Hurt Publishers

A new feature that Facebook recently has been testing in a handful of countries could hurt publishers everywhere if it should roll out globally. The feature removes users’ Liked pages from their main News Feed and aggregates them in a separate space called “Explore.” In the six countries where Facebook has been testing the idea, traffic to news outlets reportedly has dropped 60-80 percent. “Publishers should be terrified by this,” said John Carroll, a mass communications professor at Boston University.

Facebook has served as an online marketplace for armed militias in Libya and other war-torn countries, according to a news report published Wednesday. An array of light weapons bought and sold after the fall of Moammar Gadhafi unleashed a torrent of unregulated commerce in Libya, which previously had controlled online communications strictly, according to a study by Armament Research Services. Widespread trading of illicit weapons between online or hidden groups occurred between September 2014 and March 2016.

Google Expands Europeans' Internet Amnesia Zone

Google is expanding the right of Europeans to be forgotten on the Internet to domains outside their countries, according to news reports Thursday. Searches made from European IP addresses for people whom Google has granted a right to be forgotten will turn up zero links, regardless of which version of Google is used. Previously, links from such searches were blocked only from European versions of Google. Users with IP addresses outside Europe will continue to see unedited results when their searches include right-to-be-forgotten links.
