White House Puts Clamps on Data Center Development


The federal program for improving the operation of thousands of government data centers has entered a new phase that will impact significantly how electronic information is stored and managed. Proposed updates to data center operations will affect providers of data management products and could spur the use of cloud technology. Commercial vendors and others with an interest in federal data center information technology have been invited to comment on the proposals by April 1.

Apple to Sink $1.9B in Green Data Centers in Europe


Apple on Monday announced a plan to build two new data centers in Europe — one in Ireland and the other in Denmark. Apple plans to spend $1.9 billion on the project — its largest European investment to date. The new facilities will power its online services including the iTunes Store, App Store, iMessage, Maps and Siri. “We are grateful for Apple’s continued success in Europe and proud that our investment supports communities across the continent,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook, noting that the project would create hundreds of jobs.
