Google Fattens Up Entertainment Programming Search Results

Google will begin listing live air times for TV shows in its search results, Danial Alegre, president of global partnerships announced Wednesday in his keynote address at the National Association of Broadcasters trade show in Las Vegas. This new feature will allow users to search for movies and TV shows. Results will show availability on broadcast and cable TV channels, as well as through the streaming and online rentals that Google already lists. This may be just the first step in a larger entertainment play for Google.

Sony last week announced it would begin taking preorders for a cost-shaving virtual reality bundle. Priced at $499, the PlayStation VR bundle includes everything needed except the PlayStation 4 console. It contains a VR headset, cables, stereo headphones, a PlayStation camera, two PlayStation Move motion controllers and a pair of discs etched with VR demos. Purchasing the headset by itself would set you back $399. One of the included discs is PlayStation VR Worlds, which has five interactive experiences.

Report: Apple Moving Quickly to Sell New iPhone, iPad Models

Apple will begin selling new models of its iPad tablets and iPhones in mid-March, according to a report published last week. It will debut a 4-inch iPhone, called the “iPhone 5se,” as well as a new iPad Air at a March 15 event, followed by a retail and online sales launch three days later, said the report. Apple is not expected to offer its usual preorder sales event, but that decision is subject to change. The new tablet, called the “iPad Air 3,” reportedly will include a new Smart Connector and support for various Apple accessories.

Walmart Catches the Drone Delivery Bug

Walmart on Monday filed a request with the Federal Aviation Administration to begin deploying commercial drones to transport goods from outside vendors to its distribution centers, as well as to customers’ homes. The company, which has been testing drones in indoor flights, wanted an exemption in order to deploy small unmanned aircraft systems, wrote Shekar Natarajan, Walmart vice president, logistics strategy, in a letter to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. Its goal was to create a more efficient delivery system to move merchandise.

Verizon has announced it will begin sharing customer data with its AOL Advertising Network, triggering concerns about privacy and customer tracking. AOL will use Verizon’s supercookie — which is impossible to get rid of — to track users.
