Regulators Impose Caveats on Charter TWC Merger Approval

Federal regulators on Monday granted approval of Charter Communications’ $78 billion merger with Time Warner Cable and its $10.4 billion acquisition of Bright House Networks, but with a number of tough conditions. The Justice Department filed a lawsuit and settlement agreement in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia that would block the new company, which it calls “New Charter” for legal purposes, from enforcing any deal that makes it harder for online video distributors to get video content from programmers.

Tech Sector Sees Federal IT Act as 1st Step to Significant Reform

The political spotlight in Washington was on congressional approval of the 2015 budget before legislators broke for the holidays, but a less volatile proposal also was passed in the closing days of the session — one of considerable importance to the information technology sector. In addition to the budget, Congress approved the Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act, which technically was rolled into the National Defense Authorization Act of 2015. FITARA focuses largely on the role of federal CIOs and addresses other IT issues.

Amazon Floats Drone Exemption Proposal to FAA

Amazon is ramping up its drone delivery project and is hoping for approval to conduct outdoor testing on its own property. The company has petitioned the FAA for an exemption from rules barring it from testing the devices.
