proVanceTek dabbles in event planning

USITT 2009 Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio

USITT 2009 in Cincinnati, Ohio

This weekend we visited USITT Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio.

What is USITT you might ask? Most audiences at a performance don’t stop to consider everything it takes to get to that point. The performance is just the tip of the entertainment iceberg. So much creativity and hard work go into scenes, lighting, costumes, sound, make-up, stage managing, and the performance area itself not to mention keeping everyone safe. It is the design, production, and technology professionals in the performing arts and entertainment industry that the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) has served since 1960. USITT provides an environment for these professionals to connect, create, share, and communicate their craft.

What specifically is the Annual Conference you may wonder? It's the combination of professional, university educators and students, secondary educators, and even novice theatre technicians who come to learn about the latest technical theatre trends from theatrical vendors - who bring the latest and greatest technology - and presenters - who have seminars covering management, lighting, sound, costuming, state makeup, etc.

USITT's 49th Annual Conference & Stage Expo held in Cincinnati was a huge success with record attendance. The 2010 Annual Conference will be held in Kansas City, Missouri and in 2011 it will be in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Another Invisible Children Benefit Concert!

Invisible Children

You may recall that we worked with the Hilliard Davidson High School Symphony Orchestra in November of 2007 on a project that was to benefit concert for the children of Uganda, which are suffering from a twenty year war that has ravaged their country.

We were once again asked to assist Hilliard Davidson High School and Invisible Children with the audio design and engineering, along with the video production for their concert in the Hilliard Davidson High School Performing Arts Center.

Similar to the last benefit concert, we're also planning on producing a short video that will accompany the orchestra during their closing number. The montage-like video will feature still photos from Uganda, video recorder in Uganda, and artistic live video shots of the orchestra as they perform.

The concert is free of cost, but donations will be accepted to benefit the children through the care of Invisible Children Inc.

Broadcast Hilliard Davidson High School Events in Auditorium to Entire Building

Broadcast Hilliard Davidson High School Events in Auditorium to Entire Building

For years Hilliard Davidson High School has been contracting out jobs to temporarily run coax from their auditorium to their High School's CCTV head end. We were contracted to enable the staff to access this technology for themselves.

We took existing technology in the auditorium and in their television studio and configured it such that any video feed from their matrix switcher in their auditorium and any audio feed from their sound console in their auditorium can be sent over existing in wall wiring (installed as a part of the Ohio SchoolNet program a few years back) to their television studio. From there, a simple switch is toggled and the feed from the auditorium is instantly broadcast to the entire building.

Hilliard Memorial Middle School Awards Ceremony

Hilliard Memorial Middle School Awards Ceremony

We were asked to provide professional live sound and video production services for the Hilliard Memorial Middle School 2007-2008 School Year Awards Ceremony. The event was held in the Hilliard Davidson High School Performing Arts Center.

The event usually consists of the awards ceremony portion, followed by live talent show style entertainment provided by the teachers from Memorial. Due to sticky contract negotiations between the school board and Hilliard teachers, the administration of Memorial Middle School was hesitant to ask teachers to spend unpaid extracurricular time for the project. Instead, the staff (during their conference breaks, before school, and after school) created a couple entertaining videos to be played for the students at the awards ceremony.

We provided minimal post production editing services (they already had the videos pretty much ready to go live), live video production services to professionally project the video on the movie screen and broadcast the video into overflow seating areas outside the auditorium, and live audio engineering.

The Greater Columbus Community Orchestra Concert

The Greater Columbus Community Orchestra Concert

proVanceTek provided theatrical technical services to The Greater Columbus Community Orchestra for their May 18th concert held at Hilliard Davidson High School.

As mentioned in a recent Columbus Dispatch article: "A grant from the Hilliard Arts Council will aid the oldest and largest community orchestra in central Ohio. And to signify an expansion of its mission, the Upper Arlington Community Orchestra is renaming itself the Greater Columbus Community Orchestra."

proVanceTek provided complete lighting and sound support. Hilliard Davidson Performing Arts Center provides lighting and sound equipment for use when community events take place in the facility or when the facility is rented to an outside organization, however, the facilities technical staff is usually required to be present and on the payroll as event staff. proVanceTek has been hired on occasion to act as subcontractor for such events when there is a conflict in staff scheduling.

Sound and Lighting Tech for Hilliard Five By Design Concert

Five By Design

Five By Design is one of the nation's leading performing arts and symphony pops attractions, the Minneapolis-based vocal quintet is the creative talent behind musical retrospectives of Radio Days, Club Swing, Stay Tuned, and A Winter's Evening.

The Hilliard Arts Council is bringing "Five By Design," a group of five singers for a 7:00pm February 10, 2008 performance at the Hilliard Davidson Performing Arts Center.

The Hilliard Arts Council brought in Robert Nelson Vance, owner of proVanceTek, as an outside consultant and contractor, in 2005 when Five By Design came to Hilliard the first time. He was once again asked back this year.

Several visits have already been made to Davidson Theatre to hang and focus lighting for the event. Further assistance for the upcoming Sunday evening performance will include the hanging and focusing of additional lighting instruments and the load-in and interfacing of Five By Design sound equipment.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for senior citizens and students. In order to hopefully fill the auditorium for this performance there is a $5 discount for all tickets ordered by January 20, 2007. Tickets can be ordered by calling 527-4407 or by emailing Ken Brenneman.

On November 28, 2007, the Chamber Orchestra at Hilliard Davidson High School held a benefit concert for the children of Uganda, which are suffering from a twenty year war that has ravaged their country.

Robert Nelson Vance, owner of proVanceTek, was asked to assist Hilliard Davidson High School and Invisible Children with the audio design and engineering, along with the video production for their concert in the Hilliard Davidson High School Performing Arts Center.

The concert was free of cost, but donations could be made to benefit the children through the care of Invisible Children Inc. The Chamber Orchestra performed songs from several classic rock bands, including the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and The Doors. The concert featured several videos from Invisible Children.

We produced a four minute video to accompany the orchestra and dancers for their closing arrangement of the concert. It was projected on a 30 foot tall, 50 foot wide theatrical cyclorama located upstage of the orchestra. A still frame of the projected video can be seen in the above image.

The concert was featured in the article "Dancer finds way to help Ugandan children" from ThisWeek Community Newspapers on November 27, 2007.
