Air Cargo Deal Gives Amazon More Control Over Deliveries

Amazon has entered a 10-year lease agreement with Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, the aircraft company announced last week. Under the agreement, Amazon has the right to buy up to 30 percent of Atlas Air. Amazon will lease a fleet of 20 Boeing 767-300 converted freighters — including crew, maintenance and insurance — for seven years, with extensions to 10 years. Amazon also will dry lease from Atlas Air’s Titan Aviation unit for 10 years. The dry lease operation calls for Atlas Air to provide the aircraft but no crew.

Android Is Download King, but iOS Reigns Over Revenues

Worldwide downloads of Android apps in 2015 were double those for iOS, but revenues from iOS apps were nearly twice those of Android, according to an App Annie report released this week. First-time device owners in emerging markets drove the huge increase in Android downloads, researchers found. “This growth opens up avenues for publishers to create new markets by targeting unmet needs of users in a given region,” the report says. “Meanwhile, app revenue increased notably year over year as iOS cemented its position as app store revenue king.”

IDC: There's Hope on the PC Horizon

IDC last week reported worldwide PC shipments totaled nearly 72 million units in the fourth quarter of 2015, down 10.6 percent year over year — the largest YoY decline ever. While shipments in Q4 were slightly higher than in Q3, 2015 was the first year since 2008 that fewer than 300 million PCs were shipped. Longer PC life cycles, competition from mobile phones and tablets, economic issues, and social disruptions in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific contributed to the poor results.
