PayPal cofounder Peter Thiel ran a victory lap following Tuesday’s presidential election, but many other Silicon Valley figures were stunned by the historic upset victory of real estate mogul Donald Trump against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Thiel, a billionaire conservative activist, last month made headlines by donating $1.25 million to Trump in the midst of the furor over the candidate’s Access Hollywood comments about women. Trump now has an “awesomely difficult task,” Thiel said in a statement released Wednesday.

Rights Advocates Blast EU and Tech Firms' Hate Speech Code


Digital rights and free speech advocates are up in arms over Tuesday’s announcement of an agreement between the European Commission and four leading U.S. social media firms — Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Microsoft — on a Code of Conduct designed to crack down on hate speech. The companies have agreed to adopt a system that allows users to flag illegal hate speech and incitement to violence. They also agreed to review flagged posts within 24 hours and to take appropriate action, such as removing them or blocking access.

Groupon Flies High on Alibaba Investment


Groupon’s stock slipped a little on Wednesday, following Tuesday’s dramatic 40 percent spike on the news that Alibaba had purchased about a 5 percent stake in the company. Alibaba last week disclosed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it had bought about 33 million shares of Groupon. The disclosure boosted shares of Alibaba, as well as the struggling Yahoo, which owns a stake in Alibaba. Groupon last week released an encouraging Q4 earnings report, and the company’s stock rose by roughly 29 percent.

Microsoft Pushes Deeper Into Linux, Containers, IoT


Microsoft announced a slew of corporate cloud solutions at Tuesday’s AzureCon. “The value for IoT is in control, data collection and analysis, and Microsoft is apparently building a cloud service that can do all three, and wrapping it with enterprise-level security,” said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group. Microsoft also announced a new open Azure Container Service that will let enterprises deploy and configure Apache Mesos to cluster and schedule Dockerized apps across multiple virtual hosts.
