Kingsoft on Tuesday announced that it has expanded its WPS Office suite to include WPS Cloud. The upgrade enables users to work in a cross-platform office suite environment with added storage, file roaming and sharing capabilities. The cloud-enhanced version is available for PCs and mobile as a fully functional free release and with premium subscriptions. It runs on Linux, Windows, Mac and Android devices. The free version is ad-supported. Today’s mobile users are accustomed to ad-supported apps and other software, according to Kingsoft.

Twitch Aims to Get Ahead of Steam


Twitch, the Amazon-owned live-streaming video platform, on Tuesday launched its highly anticipated online game store. It includes goodie bags and other incentives, both for gamers who take the plunge and streamers who provide the content. Twitch earlier this year announced that it would be selling games and in-game content directly through the online store, competing directly with major gaming sites like Steam. House Votes to Kill Privacy Rules Binding ISPs


The United States House of Representatives on Tuesday approved the Congressional Review Act, undoing privacy restrictions imposed on Internet service providers during the Obama administration. The Senate passed the CRA last week in a 50-48 vote along party lines. The White House has expressed support for the CRA. “This is one time I believe the White House,” remarked John Simpson, privacy project director at Consumer Watchdog. Privacy advocates have fought against the CRA, warning of its dire consequences, but ISPs and businesses support it.

Amazon Confirms Deal to Buy Middle East E-Commerce Leader Souq.com


Amazon on Tuesday confirmed that it has agreed to buy Souq.com, the leading online retailer in the Middle East, reportedly edging out rival Emaar Malls’ $800 million offer. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Amazon reportedly agreed to pay less for Souq than Emaar had offered. Souq, led by cofounder and CEO Ronaldo Mouchawar, claims to be the largest online retail and marketplace platform in the Arab world, selling more than 8.4 million products across 31 retail categories.

Walmart Launches 'Store No. 8' E-Commerce Venture


Marc Lore, CEO of Walmart eCommerce U.S., on Tuesday discussed the company’s plans to launch a new venture, called “Store No. 8,” which will operate as a Silicon Valley incubator for new online stores. The move reflects Walmart’s ambition to catch up to Amazon in the e-commerce retail space. Lore unveiled the plans at the annual Shoptalk conference in Las Vegas. FCC Reverses Course on Internet Privacy Rules


The Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday issued a joint statement following the FCC’s temporary stay of data security regulations. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and FTC Acting Chairman Maureen K. Ohlhausen issued the statement to address the FCC’s decision, in essence, to overturn rules designed to bolster broadband consumer privacy. Both chairs had disagreed with the FCC’s unilateral 2015 decision to strip the FTC of any authority over broadband providers’ privacy and data security practices.

Verizon Cuts Better Deal for Breach-Battered Yahoo


Verizon and Yahoo on Tuesday announced new terms for the acquisition deal they inked last summer. Verizon will pay $350 million less than the original contract price, which places the new value of the deal at $4.48 billion. Yahoo will be responsible for 50 percent of any breach-related cash liabilities incurred as a result of non-SEC government investigations and third-party litigation, under the new agreement. Yahoo will be fully responsible for any liabilities resulting from shareholder lawsuits and SEC investigations. The acquisition still “makes strategic sense,” said Verizon EVP Marni Waldon.
