Hack of Half a Billion Records Takes Shine Off Yahoo's Data Trove


Yahoo on Thursday disclosed that a data breach in late 2014 resulted in the theft of information from at least 500 million customer accounts. Based on a recent investigation, it appears that state-sponsored hackers carried out the attack, the company said. Account information compromised includes names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords, and encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers. Payment card and bank account information was not compromised, according to Yahoo.

Three Charged in Hacking Case That Spammed 60M


Federal prosecutors in New Jersey on Tuesday charged three men in a $2 million identity theft scheme to hack corporate computer systems and blast spam messages to more than 60 million people. The defendants face up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines on wire fraud charges, and up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines on email and computer conspiracy charges, according to prosecutors. In addition, the indictment indicates $299,653 held in several bank accounts and other assets are subject to forfeiture.

FTC, Private Sector Lock Horns Over Consumer Data Protection


The major headline hacking event of 2014 involved data theft at a highly visible enterprise: Sony Pictures. Perhaps just as significant in e-commerce security was a 2014 federal court ruling which allows the Federal Trade Commission to continue penalizing commercial firms for failure to protect consumer data from hackers. That decision has been challenged, and in early March the FTC and its opponent will square off for oral arguments in court on whether the FTC has exceeded its authority for protecting consumer records.
