Comcast Rolls the Dice With Xfinity Instant TV

Comcast has led the way in cable television ever since it acquired AT&T Broadband a decade ago. However, in recent years, new technologies — like IPTV and wireless TV from new competitors like AT&T and DirecTV Now — have been eating away at Comcast’s growth. That’s why Comcast not only has introduced Xfinity Mobile, which is its new wireless service, but also is getting ready to launch its own IPTV service, Xfinity Instant TV. I congratulate Comcast on this forward thinking, but there are no guarantees that IPTV will work for Comcast.

Verizon Wakes Up to Join Mobile TV Race

Following decades of slow movement due to cable companies facing no competition, the television world is changing rapidly. Lots of challengers have arisen in the pay-TV space in recent years. One of the latest comes from Verizon, which has improved its FiOS mobile app to offer data-free streaming. AT&T’s DirecTV started this ball rolling with its wireless TV, or mobile TV, offering. It forced all the major competitors — Verizon, Comcast Xfinity and Charter Spectrum — to strategize and pick up their pace.

The EPA, Social Media and Politics

Before the Internet, messages were spread by television and newspaper ads and highway billboards. Today that is done through social media. Virtually everyone knows about it, and many people use it. Does it make any sense that a U.S. government agency could violate any laws for using social media to carry out its mission? Doesn’t make sense to me. However, last month, the GAO ruled that the EPA violated federal law and took part in covert propaganda to solicit support for a rule aimed at protecting streams and surface waters.
