Facebook's Original Programming Plans Take Shape

Facebook last week signed agreements with several content firms — among them Vox, Buzzfeed, ATTN and Group Nine Media, according to reports. The deals are widely viewed as part of the company’s strategy to attract millennials to its live-streaming Web content. Facebook will offer multi-tiered programming, according to a report that cited sources familiar with the plans. The service is expected to include Facebook’s own scripted original shows, which will run up to 30 minutes, as well other companies’ shorter videos, running up to 10 minutes.

Raging Redditors Roar for Pao's Resignation

More than 208,000 people have signed a petition calling on Reddit interim CEO Ellen Pao to step down. Many Redditers fear Pao will run Reddit into the ground, the petition claims, noting that alternative sites have sprung up in recent months and received vast amounts of traffic. The immediate cause of the unrest was last week’s dismissal of Victoria Taylor, Reddit’s director of talent, who was responsible for 1,400 of its “Ask me Anything” interviews. Moderators of several hundred subreddits protested by taking their communities private.

California Lays Down the Kill-Switch Law

Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday signed into law a bill requiring that anti-theft measures be incorporated into all smartphones sold within California. The measure applies to phones manufactured after July 1, 2015. Though it doesn’t specify the particular technologies used to enable that capability — both hardware and software solutions are possibilities — Senate Bill 962 does require that the feature, often referred to as a “kill switch,” give smartphone users the ability to remotely disable their devices in the event they’re lost or stolen.

Netflix Ponies Up for Better TWC Net Connection

Netflix on Tuesday announced that it has signed an interconnection agreement with Time Warner Cable, marking the fourth such deal the content provider has signed with a major Internet service provider. Netflix in recent months has signed similar agreements with Comcast, Verizon and AT&T. Though not Netflix’s first such deal, news of the agreement has raised fresh concerns about the future of Net neutrality — a goal Netflix has advocated vociferously. Whether it really has much bearing on Net neutrality, however, is a matter of opinion.
