Netflix Surprises Itself With Gangbusters Membership Growth


Netflix generated $8.3 billion in global streaming revenue in 2016, with 35 percent year-over-year growth, it reported Wednesday. The company ended last year with 93.8 million members, including 19 million net additions — up from 17.4 million new subscribers in 2015. Netflix’s global revenue for the fourth quarter of 2016 grew by 41 percent year-over-year to $2.4 billion, and 7.05 million net new members joined during that time period. The U.S. accounted for 1.93 million new subscribers, while the rest, 5.12 million, came from international markets. The growth greatly exceeded Netflix’s own forecast.

Music Industry Rebounds on Streaming Subscription Surge


The music industry is showing its best surge in revenue in nearly two decades, led by a major shift toward streaming subscription services by Apple, Spotify and others firms, according to a new mid-year report the RIAA released this week. The report shows an 8.1 percent gain in retail revenue to $3.4 billion during the first half of 2016, the strongest growth since the late 1990s, according to report author Joshua Friedlander, SVP of strategic data analysis at RIAA. Huge gains in streaming revenue and market share fueled the increase.

Senate Committee Hears Litany of IRS Cybersecurity Failings


The U.S. Internal Revenue Service’s cybersecurity measures are woefully inadequate, according to testimony presented this week to the Senate Finance Committee. The hearing was convened to look into how the IRS is safeguarding private taxpayer information this filing season and to determine what improvements may be necessary, said Sen. Orrin Hatch, the committee’s chairman. Agencies, tax preparers and Congress have failed taxpayers, ranking member Sen. Ron Wyden said.

IRS Halts Hack Attack


The Internal Revenue Service on Tuesday said it recently discovered and halted an automated bot attack on its electronic filing PIN application website. Identity thieves used malware in an attempt to generate E-file PINs for 464,000 Social Security numbers stolen from another source, the IRS said. The hackers succeeded in accessing an E-file PIN for 101,000 of those numbers. No personally identifiable information was compromised or disclosed by its systems, the IRS said. It will mail notifications to inform affected taxpayers of the incident.

Facebook Bathes in Q4 Mobile Magnificence


Facebook on Wednesday reported earnings of 79 cents per share on $5.84 billion in revenue for Q4 2015, and annual revenue of $17.93 billion, an increase of 44 percent year over year. Net income for the full year ended Dec. 31 was $3.69 billion. Analysts reportedly had expected per-share earnings of about 68 cents on revenue of $5.37 billion for the quarter. “2015 was a great year for Facebook,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said. “Our community continued to grow and our business is thriving.”

ARM earnings grow 22 percent on royalties from newer smartphones like iPhone 6
