Study: Music Improves Customer Experience, Even in Serious Settings

Music can enhance the customer experience even in nontraditional retail environments, suggests a study released Thursday by Mood Media and the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers. The study was conducted in France. Customers had a more favorable experience in five business locations — including gas station, optical, banking, sports apparel and pharmacy locations, the study found. “It’s undeniable that music has an amazing ability to connect on an intimate and personal level,” said Mood Media SVP Danny Turner.

Salesforce Gets Granular

If you need an example of digital disruption, you can’t do better than the retail banking industry. A byzantine collection of rules and regulations plus the overhang of many legacy systems have conspired to prevent banks from becoming more involved with their customers. Even innovations like the ATM, which entered the scene several decades ago, only serve to distance banks from their customers. This leaves plenty of opportunity for upstart technology vendors to disrupt the applecart.

The Grim Upward Trajectory of Mobile Fraud Risks

More than 8,600 retail locations will shut down this year, following the 5,077 that closed last year, based on data from Credit Suisse. Moreover, 2017 could surpass 2008 — the worst year for retail closures on record — when 6,163 stores shut down operations. However, unlike 2008, when overall consumer spending declined with the onset of a global recession — the worst economic downturn since the end of World War II — today’s shop killer is online commerce, notably sales made on mobile devices.

Will Amazon Go Reinvent Retail?

Every time I walk into a retail store, I complain. I grumble to my wife about the same pet peeve every time we go shopping. After walking the aisles and filling the basket, you then must go through the most inefficient checkout process. First you unload everything, then it’s rung up, then you put the items in bags that go back into your basket before you can walk out of the store. There must be a better way. Amazon Go suggests there is. Shouldn’t it be easy, with today’s technology, to cut through the mess and reinvent this process?

Amazon Pushes Dash Buttons as Customers Give Them the Gong

Amazon on Tuesday announced a wide expansion of its Dash Button on-touch retail sales program, despite indications of relatively low acceptance among its key base of Prime customers. The company added more than 50 retail products to its lineup of Dash thumb-drive size buttons, which let consumers reorder things like detergent and toilet tissue when their supply is getting low. “This expanded brand list is a result of Dash Button’s growing popularity,” said Amazon spokesperson Katie McFadzean.

The Gears of E-Commerce

As the U.S. retail industry puts another long holiday shopping season behind it, a few changes appear to be taking place. For one thing, it appears there’s a new recipe for success. Growing a business requires more than setting up a fancy website, placing inventory into a warehouse, and engaging a service to make speedy deliveries. There are severe costs and challenges involved in building a successful e-commerce operation, and today’s customers have little patience for an online experience that falls short.
