Amazon Rides High on Profit Stunner


Amazon last week stunned Wall Street by releasing third-quarter earnings that blazed past consensus estimates on the strength of its growing cloud services business and surprisingly strong response to its efforts to boost membership in its Prime program. Shares were up almost 7 percent to $601.72 in late trading Friday, after reaching as high as $619.94 for the day. Net income was $79 million in the quarter, or 17 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $437 million, or 95 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter.

Nintendo Scotches Android Console Rumor


Nintendo not only has embraced the idea of releasing its iconic intellectual properties for mobile devices, but also is planning to base its next videogame console on a version of the Android operating system, according to a Japanese-language business publication.
The outlet recently was proven right after reporting that Nintendo planned to expand to smartphones and tablets. This time around, the publication claimed an inside source revealed that Nintendo’s next console, code named “NX,” will run on Android.

Walmart Banks on Shaking Up E-Commerce


Walmart will be releasing its earnings report on Tuesday, and analysts are expecting hear a lot about the role of e-commerce in the current quarter, as well as an important factor in the company’s growth strategy. One of things it’s planning to do is to take on Amazon Prime. Walmart last week confirmed that it will roll out its own subscription shipping service, reportedly code-named “Tahoe,” this summer. “We will have a closed beta this summer by invitation to test an unlimited shopping program that is predictable and affordable,” said Walmart spokesperson Ravi Jariwala.
