Russian Regulators Scoop Apple Into Price-Fixing Probe


A Russian regulatory authority earlier this week named Apple, along with more than a dozen Russian retailers, as a target for an investigation into price-fixing activities. The Federal Antimonopoly Service, or FAS, has seen signs of price-setting coordination among iPhone resellers in Russia, according to a notice published on the agency’s website. A preliminary investigation revealed that since last fall, when Apple introduced the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus in Russia, a majority of resellers have maintained the same prices for some time.

Dell Sells IT Services to Raise Cash for EMC Deal


NTT Data on Monday announced in a regulatory filing that it has agreed to purchase Dell’s IT services business for just over $3 billion. Dell reportedly agreed to the sale to help finance its pending $67 billion purchase of EMC. It has 28 bankers underwriting $10 billion of its financing package for the deal, which began with eight banks, but “Dell reported in previous public filings that it would consider divestitures as it worked to finalize its acquisition of EMC,” Dell spokesperson David Frink pointed out.

FTC Issues Regulatory Warning on Big Data Use


The Federal Trade Commission is extending its regulatory reach to the e-commerce impact of big data. For years, the FTC has asserted vigorously its authority to apply consumer protection laws to emerging developments in the IT realm. Now it is signaling that it will apply that same vigor to big data under the regulatory authority it possesses through the FTC Act and other laws. It “will continue to monitor areas where big data practices” could violate those laws “and will bring enforcement actions where appropriate,” the FTC said in a report.

AmazonFresh, USPS Could Be Marriage Made in Heaven


The U.S. Postal Service recently filed a request with the Postal Regulatory Commission for approval of a two-year test that would expand its collaboration with AmazonFresh, a service that offers same-day delivery of perishable groceries and other items. The postal service said the expanded test could bring in revenue of more than $10 million a year. The USPS has been collaborating with Amazon for years. It has delivered books, movies and consumer electronics. It recently began delivering dry food goods through the Amazon Prime Pantry service.
