Walmart Delivers E-Commerce Stunner

Walmart on Thursday reported soaring e-commerce growth during its fiscal first quarter, along with strong organic sales figures. Online sales grew a stunning 63 percent during the quarter, perhaps in response to the company’s newly introduced free two-day shipping and its upgraded mobile app. “We’re moving faster to combine our digital and physical assets to make shopping more enjoyable and faster for customers, but we also see plenty of room to improve,” CEO Doug McMillon said during the company’s quarterly conference call.

Take Marketing Off Autopilot and Get Creative

More than a quarter of marketers went into marketing because they wanted to be creative, researchers have found. So why do so many B2B marketing efforts seem exactly the same?
The reason, in part, is that some things work well. In nature, convergent evolution leads different kinds of organisms to similar solutions when they work. The number of strategies that will lead to success is limited. Marketers don’t simply echo the successful efforts of other marketers, though — they also parrot things that don’t really work.

Oracle's Cloud Strategy: A Fine Balance

Oracle recently held a call for analysts to discuss its results for the last quarter, and there were multiple bright spots. It was much like a similar call 90 days previous, and together the calls drove home the conclusion that Oracle is turning into a cloud company. A casual observer might not be convinced, since the macro numbers show a company barely growing. Oracle told the story succinctly: Total Revenues were $9.0 billion, flat in U.S. dollars and up 1 percent in constant currency. However, the apparent stasis actually was good news.

Why 1 Billion iPhones Sold Matters

Sales of the iPhone for the current quarter may be down, but sales for the decade are up, way up. Apple last week announced that it had sold its billionth iPhone, a historic feat for a consumer electronics product from a single vendor. “We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “iPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history. It’s become more than a constant companion.”
