Tech Leaders Urge UN to Ban AI-Based Lethal Weapons

A group of the world’s top technology leaders have published an open letter urging the UN to ban the use of artificial intelligence in weapons systems, amid growing concerns that autonomous killer robots could wind up taking control. The group of 116 companies, most of which specialize in robotics or AI, argued that its growing use could revolutionize modern warfare in irreversible ways and pose a danger to nation states. “Lethal autonomous weapons threaten to become the third revolution in warfare,” the letter states.

Yahoo Publishes NSLs Following Freedom Act Reforms

Yahoo last week published the text of three National Security Letters it received from the FBI in 2013. The letters demand the names, addresses, length of service, and electronic communications transactional records — existing transaction and activity logs and all email header information — of the targets. However, they do not ask for any content — either the subject lines or bodies of emails. Yahoo sent the FBI the name, address and length of service for each of the accounts identified in two of the NSLs.

CNBC's Password Security Lesson Fails Spectacularly

CNBC earlier this week published a piece with the goal of helping users strengthen their password security, but the attempt backfired badly. An interactive tool provided to help readers detect the strength of their passwords was to blame. Readers were asked to enter potential passwords into a field, and see how long it would take the system to crack them. They were told that adding capital letters, numbers and symbols would help strengthen a password, and they were assured that no passwords were being stored.
