New Google Service Makes Machine Learning More Accessible

Google on Wednesday released its Cloud AutoML Vision service in Alpha. It is the first in a planned series of Cloud AutoML services designed to help people with limited machine learning expertise build their own custom models using advanced techniques such as learning2learn and transfer learning. Learning2learn is a process for automating machine learning, while transfer learning “takes a fully trained model for a set of categories and retrains it from the existing weights for new classes,” a Google Cloud spokesperson said.

Amazon Banishes Apple and Google Streamers

Amazon last week said it planned to stop selling streaming devices from rivals Apple and Google. A pillar of its Prime ecosystem, Prime Video, was incompatible with Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast, the company suggested. It made the decision to “avoid customer confusion,” according to a company statement. Other devices with streaming capabilities, such as Roku set-top boxes, and PlayStation and Xbox gaming consoles, would continue to be available on Amazon, the company said.

Will Google Win the Alphabet Game?

Earlier this week I planned to focus this column on saying farewell to Google+. Then Google suddenly announced something much bigger. It is splitting itself into several different companies under one master brand called “Alphabet.” Splitting up is what Google has needed to do for several years. The idea of creating a master brand makes enormous sense for a company like Google, which is an octopus with many arms. However, it is only right if it is done correctly. Some companies attempt it and win big time, but others fail.

AT&T, DirecTV Merger Could Hamper Cord-Cutting

AT&T’s planned merger with DirecTV is far from a done deal. Among the objections that have been raised is one stemming from a filing this week with the Federal Communications Commission. There is now concern that the merger would make it more difficult for consumers to cut their cable-TV cords. The companies told the FCC in a public interest statement that the merger is the only way they would be able to compete with the likes of Comcast and Time Warner Cable — two companies that also have a pending merger.
