Silicon Valley Reels From Trump Shock

PayPal cofounder Peter Thiel ran a victory lap following Tuesday’s presidential election, but many other Silicon Valley figures were stunned by the historic upset victory of real estate mogul Donald Trump against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Thiel, a billionaire conservative activist, last month made headlines by donating $1.25 million to Trump in the midst of the furor over the candidate’s Access Hollywood comments about women. Trump now has an “awesomely difficult task,” Thiel said in a statement released Wednesday.

PayPal Flies Solo on Nasdaq

PayPal on Monday returned to the Nasdaq independent of eBay. PayPal debuted at a market value 1.4 times its former parent — $46.6 billion — while eBay’s capitalization shrunk to $34 billion. The companies agreed to split in September due to market pressures and some nudging by corporate raider turned shareholder value advocate Carl Icahn. Although analysts are picking PayPal as the clear winner, eBay was sanguine about the divide. “Both standalone companies are well positioned for success,” said eBay spokesperson Abby Smith.

Will PayPal Become the Next BlackBerry?

Recently I had a problem with a purchase, which led me to ask an important question: Will PayPal become the next BlackBerry or Nokia? PayPal must update, or it will lose to new competitors like Apple Pay, Google Wallet, CurrentC and Square, whose intention is to reinvent the e-commerce and mobile payment space. PayPal was a great service when the Internet was young and consumers had no other choice. It gave us a way to do business with lots of small companies anywhere in the U.S., or in fact the world.

PayPal, eBay Headed for Splitsville

eBay on Tuesday announced that its 12-year marriage to PayPal was coming to an end. The move comes mere months after eBay beat down an attempt by corporate raider Carl Icahn to peel PayPal from the online auction site. “For more than a decade, eBay and PayPal have mutually benefited from being part of one company, creating substantial shareholder value,” said eBay President and CEO John Donahoe. “Keeping eBay and PayPal together beyond 2015 clearly becomes less advantageous to each business strategically and competitively.”
