Qualcomm Answers Apple's $1B Lawsuit, Files Counterclaims

Qualcomm has fired back with a response and counterclaim to Apple’s $1 billion federal patent suit filed earlier this year. Apple breached agreements and encouraged regulatory attacks in a scheme to coerce unfair licensing terms, Qualcomm claimed. Apple’s suit argues that Qualcomm used its dominant position in semiconductors to force it to pay billions in additional royalty payments for technologies like Touch ID or Apple Pay, or even added memory, which have nothing to do with the Qualcomm baseband processor chipsets used in mobile phones.

Apple Loses Video Over IP Patent Scuffle in Germany

A German court on Wednesday determined that Apple had infringed a patent owned by the Kudelski Group’s OpenTV division. Apple products sold in Germany can’t use streaming technology that infringes OpenTV’s patents, the court reportedly ruled. The suit was brought in 2014 in Düsseldorf District Court over three patents held by OpenTV and its sister company, Nagra. The plaintiffs alleged that Apple products and services — including iOS devices, Apple TV and the App Store — had infringed their video streaming patents.

Amazon May Let You Pay With a Wink and a Nod

Amazon has applied for a patent for selfie-based authentication for online purchases, according to a patent application published last week. Using the technology, a prospective purchaser would take a selfie, and the image would be authenticated against an image database using facial recognition software. The buyer then would perform a requested action, such as winking, to verify that the image is of a live human being. That would trigger completion of the transaction.
