Google to Ding Sluggish Sites in Mobile Search Rankings

Google has announced that page speed will be a ranking factor for mobile searches, starting in July. Speed already has been a factor in desktop search rankings. Soon, as part of Google’s new “Speed Update,” page loading time will be factored in when ranking mobile search results as well. The change will affect only pages that deliver what the slowest experience, and thus should affect only a small percentage of searches. Sites that are very slow will be down-ranked, but it is not clear whether extremely fast sites will earn a rankings boost.

Advertising Online? How's Your Viewability?

Viewability — that is, a display or video ad’s ability to be viewed effectively on a Web page — is the most critical factor in any video or display ad campaign. However, a surprisingly large percentage of display and video ads lacked either visibility or longevity, the two most important pieces of viewability, in recent studies. Visibility is the ability to gain immediate exposure within a target audience, and longevity is a video’s ability to maintain a long-term presence. How exactly can a marketer ensure short- or long-term viewability?

Has Google lost the plot again at I/O 2014, or is there a method in the madness?

Sundar Pichai of Google: Android all the things
Back in 2011, Google’s incoming CEO Larry Page promised to put ‘more wood behind fewer arrows.’ Since then, Google has made good on the promise and proceeded to shut down a large number of products (Reader, iGoogle, Buzz), and integrated or combined many others. Now, after watching Google’s I/O 2014 keynote, it would seem that Google’s spartan, utilitarian days are over: We’re now back to Google’s timeworn strategy of throwing product ideas at a wall to see what sticks. Has Google lost the plot again, or is there a method in the madness?
