White House Call for Set-Top Competition Strikes Nerves

The Obama administration last week called on the Federal Communications Commission to open the cable TV set-top box market to competition. Doing so would let companies create innovative, higher-quality and lower-cost products, the White House said. “Instead of spending nearly $1,000 over four years to lease a set of behind-the-times boxes, American families will have options to own a device for much less money that will integrate everything they want,” wrote Jason Furman and Jeffrey Zients.

White House Opens More Doors for Open Source

Federal CIO Tony Scott last month released details of a proposed policy designed to allow customized software created for one agency to be openly available to other agencies as well. Industry and government professionals may comment on the proposal by Monday. “This policy will require new software developed specifically for, or by, the federal government to be made available for sharing and reuse across federal agencies,” Scott said.
