TSMC announces plans for $16 billion foundry to push the envelope on 5nm, 3nm process nodes

TSMC is planning a massive new fab for the 5nm and 3nm nodes, with an estimated cost of $16B. Pushing the boundaries of semiconductor technology isn’t just yielding fewer and fewer positive returns — it’s getting ever-more expensive as well. No one thinks the current cycle is sustainable, but TSMC clearly believes it has a path to at least the 3nm and possibly the 2nm node.
