Netflix Climbs the Growth Wave as Cable TV Slides

Things change quickly. A few short years ago, Netflix was nothing more than a mail order video rental business. Since then, it has been growing rapidly and changing. Believe it or not, Netflix today has more U.S. subscribers than cable TV. That’s an amazing accomplishment — and a major hit to traditional cable television. Netflix and cable TV are two different technologies on opposite sides of the growth wave. Cable TV has grown over several decades, but its growth wave has crested in recent years, and it now is on the decline.

Netflix Surprises Itself With Gangbusters Membership Growth

Netflix generated $8.3 billion in global streaming revenue in 2016, with 35 percent year-over-year growth, it reported Wednesday. The company ended last year with 93.8 million members, including 19 million net additions — up from 17.4 million new subscribers in 2015. Netflix’s global revenue for the fourth quarter of 2016 grew by 41 percent year-over-year to $2.4 billion, and 7.05 million net new members joined during that time period. The U.S. accounted for 1.93 million new subscribers, while the rest, 5.12 million, came from international markets. The growth greatly exceeded Netflix’s own forecast.

Netflix Shares Fall as Subscriber Growth Hits a Wall

Shares of Netflix fell sharply Tuesday after it reported lower-than-expected Q2 earnings, which the company blamed on subscriber growth that fell short of forecasts. Netflix added 1.7 million subscribers in the quarter, pushing its total membership to more than 83 million, the company told shareholders. However, that growth was far less than the 2.5 million it had projected. “We are growing, but not as fast as we would like or have been,” reads the letter. “Disrupting a big market can be bumpy, but the opportunity ahead is as big as ever.”
