Study: Music Improves Customer Experience, Even in Serious Settings

Music can enhance the customer experience even in nontraditional retail environments, suggests a study released Thursday by Mood Media and the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers. The study was conducted in France. Customers had a more favorable experience in five business locations — including gas station, optical, banking, sports apparel and pharmacy locations, the study found. “It’s undeniable that music has an amazing ability to connect on an intimate and personal level,” said Mood Media SVP Danny Turner.

Ode to Sprint: Somebody Calls You, You Answer Quite Slowly

As I write this, I’m listening to twangy guitar music that calls up vague images of big spiny cactus, dust, and a riderless swaybacked horse. Lots of dust. I’ve been listening to the same few bars for 43 minutes and counting. Every few seconds, the music is interrupted by this: “We apologize for the wait. We are currently experiencing higher than normal volumes and long hold times. If you do not wish to wait, please hang up and call back at a later time, or you may stay on the line, and the next available representative will assist you.”

Music Industry Rebounds on Streaming Subscription Surge

The music industry is showing its best surge in revenue in nearly two decades, led by a major shift toward streaming subscription services by Apple, Spotify and others firms, according to a new mid-year report the RIAA released this week. The report shows an 8.1 percent gain in retail revenue to $3.4 billion during the first half of 2016, the strongest growth since the late 1990s, according to report author Joshua Friedlander, SVP of strategic data analysis at RIAA. Huge gains in streaming revenue and market share fueled the increase.

Pandora Plus Trades Ad Views for Extra Features

Pandora on Thursday launched Pandora Plus, a replacement for its $5-a-month Pandora One streaming music service. The 4 million Pandora One subscribers will be switched over to Plus, which will continue to offer ad-free listening at the same price. However, Pandora Plus also offers an opt-in video advertising feature that lets users skip or replay songs. Plus also has an offline mode. The service automatically saves the main station a subscriber listens to, as well as the three listened to most recently, for offline access.

Echo Owners May Get Their Own Kind of Music

Amazon is planning two music subscription services, according to rumors that began circulating last week. One is a $10 a month offering that is similar to Spotify and Apple Music, and the other is a $4-$5 a month cut-rate service available only on Amazon’s Echo device. Amazon reportedly wants to launch both in September, but it has yet to finalize deals with major music labels and publishers, or to settle on pricing for the Echo-only service, which will be ad-free and offer unlimited music on demand.

Apple denies plan to kill music downloads, as evidence mounts Apple Music can delete existing libraries without permission

AppleMusicFeature
Apple is denying claims that it will kill off download music sales to focus more on streaming. Given the high-profile problems currently affecting Apple Music, that’s probably a good thing. While it may be rare, at least some users are reporting the loss of hundreds of GB of music that they can’t replace.
