SolarCity Deal Would Take Tesla Where No Company Has Gone Before

Tesla Motors on Monday announced that it has reached an agreement to purchase SolarCity. The deal could create the world’s first vertically integrated sustainable energy company. The merger would drive efforts to develop rooftop solar systems, and better storage batteries for homes and businesses, as well as electric vehicles. It would, in essence, tie together Elon Musk’s sustainable energy businesses. The purchase of SolarCity would be an all-stock transaction with an equity value of $2.6 billion, according to Tesla.

Tesla Shares Tank on SolarCity Merger Proposal

Shares of Tesla Motors fell sharply Wednesday after the company, helmed by Elon Musk, made an offer to buy SolarCity for $2.8 billion. Musk is the chairman and top shareholder of the struggling alternative energy provider. Tesla made the offer Monday, in a letter to SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive, noting that Musk and Antonio Gracias, managing partner of Valor Equity Partners, would recuse themselves from voting on the proposal at the SolarCity board meeting. Both had recused themselves from the Tesla board meeting where the deal was approved.

Tesla Stock Plummets After Consumer Reports Do-Over

Tesla Motors’ stock price on Tuesday dropped more than 11 percent following Consumer Reports‘ withdrawal of its favorable recommendation for the company’s Model S sedan. Poor reliability contributed to the decision to withdraw its recommendation, but the magazine noted that 97 percent of Tesla owners surveyed said they would buy a car from the company again despite the problems. Musk Draws Barbs for Mean-Spirited Dig at Apple

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk’s recent comments to a German newspaper — suggesting that Apple is the “Tesla graveyard” due to its hiring of fired Tesla employees — has struck some nerves in the U.S. Musk dismissed claims that Apple had poached staff, telling the paper that those who couldn’t cut it at Tesla would go to work for Apple instead — and he added that he wasn’t kidding. Musk added that he didn’t take Apple seriously as a competitor in the automobile market. Cars are much more complex than smartphones or smartwatches, he pointed out.

When Elon Met Larry

Tesla Motors founder and CEO Elon Musk reportedly almost sold his electric car company to Google. Tesla was on the verge of bankruptcy, and Musk had all but signed the documents that would have handed over the company, according to an upcoming book. In March 2013, Tesla Motors was all but running on empty, the book suggests. Electric vehicles weren’t attracting buyers. Seeing that the end was near, Musk opted for the only viable solution — namely, to cash out. He reportedly contacted his friend, Google CEO Larry Page, and offered to sell.
