Germany Cracks Whip Against Hate Speech on Social Media

Germany on Monday began enforcing its new Network Enforcement Act, or NetzDG, which imposes a fine of up to $60 million on social media networks that fail to remove hate-inciting posts promptly.
The controversial law, adopted in mid 2017, just entered its formal enforcement phase. It is designed to help combat hate and fake news at a time when ISIS-linked terror and anti-immigrant extremism have been on the rise in Germany. Further, Russian hackers have been accused of trying to sow nationalist tendencies through social media attacks.

Google Aims to Turbocharge Online Checkout

Google on Monday rolled out an online payment service that’s designed to accelerate the online checkout process. While the new offering isn’t quite Amazon One-Click, it will eliminate many of the annoying steps that can slow down the online purchase process and often result in abandoned shopping carts. Pay with Google uses address and credit or debit card information users provide to Google to speed them through checkout. Instead of a merchant collecting that information from the customer, it’s sent behind the scenes by Google.

Google Adds a Brick to Online Publishers' Paywalls

Google on Monday announced that it was dropping its decade-old policy of requiring media and news publishers to provide a limited amount of free content. The so-called “first click free” policy meant that publishers had to make a certain amount of content available to users who conducted a search on Google, even if their stories, videos or images otherwise were behind a paywall. Media publishers had been required to provide at least three free stories or similar content before those clicking on links via Google would have to pay.

Amazon Web Services on Monday unveiled a new per-second pricing plan for EC2 instances and EBS volumes, which will take effect Oct. 2. The new pricing for Elastic Compute Cloud and Elastic Block Storage used with EC2 instances will allow greater flexibility and efficiency for customers wanting to expand their use of cloud computing data, AWS said. When EC2 launched in 2006, the only way to pay for the service was in one-hour increments, recalled Jeff Barr, chief evangelist at AWS.
