FTC's Lawsuit Should Make You Feel Very Insecure About the IoT

Even though D-Link expressly promised that many of its wireless devices had the highest level of security available, the Federal Trade Commission last month filed a lawsuit that alleges otherwise. The FTC filing includes copies of online marketing materials and technical specifications for D-Link’s products, and flatly declares that “thousands of Defendants’ routers and cameras have been vulnerable to attacks that subject consumers’ sensitive personal information and local networks to a significant risk of unauthorized access.”

EU Data Transfer Ruling Leaves Tech Companies in Quandary

The European Court of Justice ruled that the U.S. Safe Harbor agreement was inadequate to protect the privacy rights of ordinary citizens. The ruling came in response to a privacy activist’s complaint, filed with Irish regulatory authorities.

Taken to Extremes, 'Right to Be Forgotten' Is Like Burning Virtual Books

The highest court in the EU last year ordered Google to allow individuals there to request that certain specific information not be reported in Google search engine results, citing their “right to be forgotten.” Since that court ruling, hundreds of thousands of EU residents have requested that Google eliminate certain information, and Google routinely has complied with many of those requests. However, France’s data protection authority earlier this year issued an order that appears to apply the right more broadly.

EU Court Hands Google a Missing Links Quandary

The European Court of Justice, which is the highest court for matters of European Law, has handed down a preliminary ruling that indicates Google may have to remove links to consumers’ names on request — if appropriate. The case was referred to the ECJ by Spain’s Audiencia Nacional, or National High Court. The ECJ’s ruling lays down the guidelines for the Audiencia Nacional in hearing the case. Still, the indications are that Google, Facebook and other companies whose business revolves around mining and selling consumer data might be at risk.

On-Premises Banks Stick It to Walmart Customers

Walmart customers who use the banking services provided inside the chain’s stores are among the highest payers of fees — especially overdraft fees — in the U.S., an analysis of federal filings concluded. The five banks with the most Walmart branches reportedly ranked among the top 10 U.S. banks in fee income as a percentage of deposits last year, compared to other U.S. banks that earn most of their income through lending.
It is a notable finding, especially given Walmart’s reputation for providing low-cost products at significant savings.
