Where FinancialForce Fits

FinancialForce held its first big time user conference in Las Vegas last week, headlined by new CEO Tod Nielsen. The company seems to be telling us that it is adjusting course in an effort to create a new category aligned with enterprise resource planning, but very much for this century. The key concept is services, which must be explained. We’ve grown accustomed to accessing Things as a Service. This model has helped to broaden the markets for relatively expensive goods, enabling more people to access them.

Oracle's Cloud Strategy: A Fine Balance

Oracle recently held a call for analysts to discuss its results for the last quarter, and there were multiple bright spots. It was much like a similar call 90 days previous, and together the calls drove home the conclusion that Oracle is turning into a cloud company. A casual observer might not be convinced, since the macro numbers show a company barely growing. Oracle told the story succinctly: Total Revenues were $9.0 billion, flat in U.S. dollars and up 1 percent in constant currency. However, the apparent stasis actually was good news.

Deeper Connections

Salesforce held its Connections 2016 user event in Atlanta earlier this month. About 7,000 people attended, but in the Georgia World Congress Center and airplane hangar, attendance seemed smallish. It might have been held down by Gov. Nathan Deal’s slow response to vetoing a religious freedom law largely seen as discriminating against the LGBT community. This isn’t a story about politics, but Salesforce has been a leader in things such as pay parity for women and its willingness to stay out of states that appear to legislate discrimination.

Report: Amazon Primes Spotify Alternative

Amazon has held licensing talks with music industry executives in connection with its goal to launch rival to Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming music services, according to a news report Wednesday. It apparently is targeting a fall launch. Amazon already offers 1 million tracks through its Prime Music service, but that pales in comparison to Spotify’s 30 million-strong collection. While the company likely will offer promotions to lure consumers into its Prime ecosystem, the streaming service would stand on its own.

CRM's New Era

It occurred to me at Salesforce’s Marketing Cloud event held last week in New York that CRM has come full circle in a fundamental way. I was never a fan of labels like “CRM 2.0″ or “Social CRM” or whatever else came along, principally because those monikers didn’t signify anything new in doing business. Certainly you could make a case that those names described some new attributes for the traditional set of apps but that just invites a “so what?” The implicit assumption was that you’d know what to do with the stuff, and that’s saying a lot.
