The Internet of Things Is a Boon for B2B: Report

Businesses have been focusing on the Internet of Things as an enabler of growth and increased operational efficiency, as well as the means to provide a better experience to customers and partners, according to the State of the Market: Internet of Things 2017 report Verizon released this week. Seventy-three percent of executives surveyed said they either were researching or currently deploying IoT, according to the report. However, a variety of factors have dampened IoT momentum, including long capital cycles and organizational inertia.

Walmart Delivers E-Commerce Stunner

Walmart on Thursday reported soaring e-commerce growth during its fiscal first quarter, along with strong organic sales figures. Online sales grew a stunning 63 percent during the quarter, perhaps in response to the company’s newly introduced free two-day shipping and its upgraded mobile app. “We’re moving faster to combine our digital and physical assets to make shopping more enjoyable and faster for customers, but we also see plenty of room to improve,” CEO Doug McMillon said during the company’s quarterly conference call.

Instagram Snaps Up Rivals' Users

Instagram has reached a milestone of 700 million members while enjoying the fastest-ever growth rate in the company’s history. The network has grown by more than 100 million members in the last four months. Its burgeoning growth can be credited to new features like Stories, live video and disappearing messages in Direct, the company said. “Ostensibly copied from Snapchat, the feature was significant in driving the ephemeral messaging app to an IPO,” said Zach Fuller, an analyst at Midia Research.

Wireless, Telecom and Pay TV: The Future Is Coming Into Focus

Wireless, telecom and pay TV — including cable, satellite and Internet services — are all on a growth trajectory, but each company is taking a different path. That means comparing them will be more difficult going forward. In the past, the companies in these sectors in many respects looked the same and offered nearly the same basic services. Looking forward however, things appear very different. The future is all about the cloud, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, cognitive computing and much more.

The Emergence of Managed IoT Services

With every market forecast predicting rapid growth of the overall Internet of Things, industry and investor focus shifts to specific market segments that will experience the quickest adoption. While most of the attention is on particular applications and technologies, I think managed IoT services will be one of the biggest market opportunities. One of the greatest challenges to widespread IoT adoption is the lack of skills and experience to evaluate, acquire and integrate all the piece parts necessary to assemble an IoT deployment.

The Next President's Alternative Energy Agenda

Alternative energy has become a real growth engine during the last several years. It seems to bounce up and down, depending on the leadership in the White House. President Obama is a supporter, so growth has been relatively strong in recent years. The big question is, what will happen under a new president? That is a question every investor and industry worker is asking. We all want to work and invest in a growth sector. Many people have hitched their wagon to the growth engine in the energy space, and that has been a good call.

Gear Up for a Flood of IoT Support Requests

Growth of the Internet of Things in broadband households extends the life, utility and functionality of all connected solutions in the home. It also puts new pressures on existing support solutions to meet consumers’ expectations. Sixteen percent of U.S. broadband households owned a smart home device, and nearly 40 percent planned to buy a smart home product in the next 12 months, suggests a research report Parks Associates released last month. Many of those devices will be self-installed.

Comcast Blithely Juggles Its Options

Comcast on Monday reported a 10 percent earnings hike for its first quarter, driven by growth in its high-speed Internet business. Its total revenue increased by 2.6 percent to $17.9 billion for the quarter. Revenue increased 7.2 percent year-over-year, despite the $99 million in costs related to its failed $45 billion merger attempt. Comcast abandoned that deal last month, under pressure from regulators. Comcast was off to a great start for the year, CEO Brian L. Roberts said in a Monday morning conference call.
