Dropbox Drops Other Shoe in Years-Old Data Breach

Dropbox last week confirmed that more than 68 million emails and passwords have been compromised from a hack that originally was disclosed in 2012. Exposure from the breach was limited to email addresses, Dropbox originally claimed. However, based on the latest revelations, the hackers actually stole hashed and salted passwords. Even so, there have been no indications that they succeeded in accessing user accounts, the company said. The firm apologized for the belated release of the information, saying it wanted to clear up the confusion.

Hackers Launch Sneak Attacks on Microsoft's Live ID

Hackers have been infiltrating Microsoft services by sending emails to targets saying their Live IDs have been used to distribute unsolicited email, and their accounts will be blocked unless they click on an embedded link and fulfill new security requirements, Kaspersky researcher Andrey Kostin reported last week. Ultimately, following those directions lets the hackers vacuum up personal information stored in victims’ user profiles on services such as Xbox Live, Hotmail, Outlook, MSN, Messenger and OneDrive.

Federal Judge Unswayed by Microsoft's Objections to Data Demands

Microsoft’s objections to a court order requiring it to turn over a customer’s emails held on a server in Ireland have been rejected. Judge Loretta Preska of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York last week issued an oral ruling in the case, reportedly saying the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1996 authorizes such extraterritorial collections of data by the U.S. government. The judge stayed her ruling to give Microsoft time to file an appeal, which the company said it would do.
