Longstanding concerns about hiring and diversity issues in Silicon Valley recently returned to the fore. Race is a greater impediment than gender when it comes to breaking through corporate glass ceilings, suggests research conducted by Ascend. “Overlooked in the popular diversity discussion has been the issue of an Asian glass ceiling at the highest management levels,” said Ascend EVP Anna Mok.

Apple Stats Reflect Slow Slog Toward Diversification

Apple this week released a diversity report showing that initiatives to broaden the makeup of its U.S. workforce haven’t been as successful as CEO Tim Cook suggested last year. The EEO-1 report filed with the federal government covers Apple’s 2015 hires in the United States. Its numbers vary widely from the diversity numbers the company revealed in August. “In the past year we hired over 11,000 women globally, which is 65 percent more than in the previous year,” Cook said last year.

Users Choose to Wear Blinders, Facebook Suggests

Facebook, in collaboration with the University of Michigan, conducted a study on the diversity of news and opinions posted by members of the network, in an effort to determine whether its manipulation of News Feed algorithms could be responsible for creating an echo chamber of viewpoints. To cut to the chase, the researchers concluded that users themselves are to blame if all they’re exposed to is preaching to the choir. Facebook’s fiddling with filters also plays a role, the company acknowledged — but its influence was “less consequential.”
