Sales and Marketing Sentiment: Feeling Is Perception Is Reality

About a year ago, I conducted a survey that led to my company’s first-ever Sales & Marketing Sentiment Study. The idea was to get inside the heads of people in sales and marketing and reveal their feelings about the way they worked, the technology they used, and about each other. We split the results into sales and marketing responses and compared them. What we found was revealing. First, the results exploded the stereotypes about the sales and marketing relationship.

Monitoring the Sales Metrics That Matter Most

I recently conducted a simple, one-question survey, using sales pros as my target audience. The question was idiotically simple: What is the most important metric for people in sales? In this era of big data, deep analysis and predictive analytics, you might have thought that some new, performance-based metric would have surfaced as the new secret weapon — something that indicates revenue compared to time sales spends working, or deals in relation to the number of proposals written, or sales numbers in relation to the investment a company makes in incentives.

Users Choose to Wear Blinders, Facebook Suggests

Facebook, in collaboration with the University of Michigan, conducted a study on the diversity of news and opinions posted by members of the network, in an effort to determine whether its manipulation of News Feed algorithms could be responsible for creating an echo chamber of viewpoints. To cut to the chase, the researchers concluded that users themselves are to blame if all they’re exposed to is preaching to the choir. Facebook’s fiddling with filters also plays a role, the company acknowledged — but its influence was “less consequential.”

Freedom Act Leaves IT Sector at Risk for Spy Program Costs

A recent proposal in the U.S. Senate to curb the impact of electronic surveillance conducted by the National Security Agency could enhance privacy for citizens and benefit businesses as well. However, major information technology companies that help the government collect telecom and Internet data still will be vulnerable to the substantial costs of working with the NSA, even if the proposed bill becomes law. The Senate initiative, called the “USA Freedom Act,” was introduced by Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., on July 29.
