The Wonderful, Worrisome World of Self-Driving Cars

There seem to be warning stickers for everything. There may soon be a new sticker for the autonomous car era: “Warning: Self-Driving Cars Get Hacked.” Despite all the positive news about self-driving cars, there is a darker side to this story that’s very important. It’s one that can be particularly frightening if you happen to be riding in an autonomous car when it gets hacked. When your laptop gets hacked, it’s a pain in the neck. You can’t use your computer for several days until the problem is solved and your system is restored to normal.

US Navy deploys autonomous unmanned ‘swarmboats’ to keep its larger ships safe

US Navy RIMPAC ship formation
The US Navy, obviously a little bit jealous of the US Air Force’s autonomous aerial drones, has unveiled its new autonomous swarmboats. Swarmboats — that’s what the Navy is calling them, not me! — are smaller, artificially intelligent boats that protect the Navy’s larger ships by swarming enemy vessels and interdicting them before they can get close. The development of the swarmboats is most likely a direct response to the suicide bombing of USS Cole, where in October 2000 a small boat filled with explosives simply puttered up to the ship and killed 17 sailors.
