Major Tech Firms Pressure FCC to Stay the Net Neutrality Course

The Internet Association, which represents 40 of the United States’ leading technology companies — including Facebook, Google, Amazon and others — on Monday filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission, urging it to maintain Net neutrality regulations enacted during the Obama administration. The rules have created a level playing field that has helped fuel innovation in the broadband Internet space, according to IA, and any attempt to unravel them could have a disruptive impact on the industry.

Film Industry Claims Victory in Shutdown of Major Piracy Sites

The Motion Picture Association of America ran a victory lap after announcing the shutdown of movie and television torrent sites Popcorn Time and YTS. The shutdowns resulted from major legal wins in Canada and New Zealand. The MPAA last month obtained injunctions against the sites in those countries, effectively blocking them from further operation. Popcorn Time and YTS existed for the sole purpose of distributing stolen movies and television shows, with no compensation going to the people who created them, said MPAA Chairman Chris Dodd.

The EFF and law student Kendra Albert earlier this year petitioned the U.S. Copyright Office for an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s anticircumvention provisions, which would allow individuals and institutions to modify games so they remain playable after servers are shut down by the games’ publishers.

Internet Heavyweights Lock Arms to Block Fast Lane

A trade association including Amazon, Google and Netflix on Monday called on the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to adopt rules banning deals by broadband providers for faster delivery of some Internet traffic. The Internet Association, in written testimony submitted to the FCC, called for simple “light touch” rules to ensure an open and neutral Internet. Charging for enhanced or prioritized access — essentially, charging to discriminate against or degrade competing content — undermines the Internet’s level playing field, it argued.

German Publishing Group Levels Charges Against Amazon

The German Publishers and Booksellers Association has complained to German antitrust authorities that Amazon has been anticompetitive. Amazon delayed the shipment of books from publisher Bonnier following a disagreement over dividing the revenue from e-book sales, it said. Although Amazon was receiving a 30 percent commission on e-book sales, it wanted to receive more like a 40 or 50 percent cut, which would cut into publisher and author revenues, and endanger any company attempting to sell e-books in Germany, the group alleged.
