Spanning Front and Back Offices

CPQ — that is, configure, price, quote — is one of the most transitional apps, because it spans front and back offices, and because its very existence has changed these functions. Another app in this category is sales compensation management. Both of their stories are about front-office processes needing back-office data. Once the data is made available, the process evolves to be far more useful to the business. In each case, the original, fundamental application need was record keeping in the back office.

Apple to Jack Up App Prices in UK

Apple on Tuesday alerted its development community that it will be raising prices on apps sold through its App Store in the United Kingdom. Several factors influence App Store price tiers internationally, including currency exchange rates, business practices, taxes, and the cost of doing business, Apple said, noting that the factors vary by region and over time. App Store price increases also are ahead for India, due to changes in service taxes, and Turkey, due to depreciation in the Turkish lira, Apple said.

Google Plugs More AI Into G Suite Office Apps

Google last week unveiled new capabilities across its G Suite, formerly known as “Apps for Work.”
The company added some new apps infused with artificial intelligence to the mix. Quick Access in Google Drive on Android, for example, makes the files most relevant to a user’s work accessible when Drive is opened. It cuts the time spent finding a file by about half, noted Prabhakar Raghavan, vice president for apps at Google Cloud Research. Machine intelligence also is incorporated into Google Calendar.

Verizon Toys With Risky App Revenue Plan

Verizon’s reported consideration of a plan to preinstall mobile apps from major retailers and financial firms on users’ smartphones has drawn sharp criticism.
